Mil-town. The Third Coast. Brew City. No matter what you call it, Milwaukee is the largest city in the state at around 592,000 people and host to an extremely wide range of cultural backgrounds. The city was settled in the late 1700’s and was spelled “Milwaukie” until it was changed in the 1800’s to the current spelling. Since then, the city has become a bustling metropolis with multiple sports teams calling Milwaukee home.
Recreational activities are very abundant in the city. The Milwaukee County Parks system provides services to over 150 different parks within the city. The Mitchell Park Domes transport visitors to different climates from around the world, such as the desert, floral, and tropical domes. Each of these exhibits are housed in their own individual dome and showcase plants and weather conditions from each specific region. The Boerner Botanical Gardens offer magnificent floral displays for visitors of all ages . Walk through the gardens and experience beautiful floral arrangements like you’ve never seen before. The gardens offer beautiful scenery along with the opportunity to snap the perfect picture in front of rows of flowers. If golf is your thing, there are 15 different courses to pick from ranging in type from tournament courses down to par 3 courses. Need to get out of the house with your four legged friend? Take your dog to one of the many “Bark Parks” in the area and let them exercise and mingle with the other pups.
Milwaukee has a large array of sports teams to pick from including basketball, baseball, and soccer. The Milwaukee Bucks have been in the city since 1968 and have been entertaining fans ever since. With the construction of the new Fiserv Forum, fans are truly in for a treat when they go to see the home team play. Milwaukee also has multiple Division 1 college basketball teams, including the UW-Milwaukee Panthers and the Marquette Golden Eagles. Both of these teams have a history of showing up in the NCAA March Madness Tournament, which gives the city another reason to watch the tournament. On the southwest side of the city you’ll find Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers. Miller Park provides an electrifying atmosphere for fans no matter what section you’re in. Fans also have the opportunity to tailgate in the parking lot, which is a local tradition. For those who like soccer, the Milwaukee Wave is the city’s professional indoor soccer team. The Wave have been in the city since 1984 and have 7 championship titles to their name.
Nicknamed the City of Festivals, Milwaukee offers so many different festival options throughout the year, the most famous of these being Summerfest. Summerfest is an 11-day long music festival at Henry Maier Festival Park and showcases talent from all across the world. There is always a long list of big name talent every year, with a fair mix of local talent in there too. During the rest of the summer season, there are tons of other festivals going on, including those which celebrate Milwaukee’s diverse cultural background. These festivals include those such as Festa Italiana, German Fest, Bastille Days, Irish Fest, Black Arts Fest MKE, and much more. All of these events serve as a chance for residents of the city to come together and celebrate all of the city’s diverse perspectives.
Those who consider themselves “food connoisseurs” will find plenty of highly rated restaurants to eat at in the city. With a list of almost 20 restaurants that have been highly rated by the Food Network, there will be plenty to pick from. One of the local favorites, Sobelman’s, has been serving up fresh burgers for years and has one of the most extreme Bloody Mary’s in the country. It even comes with a whole chicken! The nightlife has plenty of options too. There are tons of bars to pick from, including those on the historic riverfront that create an atmosphere that cannot be matched.
Milwaukee has so much to offer to everyone who either comes to visit or choose to stay.
